George Washington (5-7 years)

Paperback – Picture Book | $17.95

D'Aulaire George Washington - Big Sky Life Books

We recommend this book: Published in 1936, this book covers the life of George Washington from birth to his presidency. As a child, George, 'learned his Bible, and he learned to be good and honest and never tell a lie'. In his copy book at school, he wrote down all the rules a gentleman should know:

"In the presence of others, sing not to yourself nor drum with your fingers nor feet. Give not your advice without being asked. Undertake not what you cannot perform, but be careful to keep your promise. Let your countenance be pleasant, but in serious matters somewhat grave."

This book covers a lot of George's life and provides ample opportunity for conversations about positive character traits!

Book summary: The story follows George Washington from a young boy to a surveyor to a soldier in the French and Indian War, where he became a war hero. Then, we see Washington lead his troops through the Revolution. (61 pages)

Abraham Lincoln (6-12 years)

Paperback – Picture Book | $17.95

D'Aulaire Abraham Lincoln - Big Sky Life Books

We recommend this book: This book is a treasure! The life of Abraham Lincoln from birth to the end of the Civil War when he stood on a balcony of the White House, looking out over the cheering people who cried: "Speak, Father Abraham." Abraham Lincoln didn't answer with words. But he made the band play "Dixie," the favorite song of the Southerners, which had not been heard in Washington since the Civil War began.

This paperback book is full of great illustrations and details on the life of Abraham Lincoln...what he enjoyed as a child, his schooling, moving several times, becoming a lawyer, etc. He walked 2-miles one way to school! But by the time he was 6 years old, he knew how to read and write and didn't 'go much' after that.

Reading through Abraham's life provides ample opportunity to point out the positive character traits: ambition, humility, work-ethic, endurance, leadership...so many!

Book summary: Abraham Lincoln continues to stand as America's most beloved President. The admiration felt by Americans for Lincoln's humble integrity, noble statesmanship, and keen sense of justice is beautifully captured in the d'Aulaires' art and prose. (64 pages)

Farmer George Plants a Nation (7-10 years)

Paperback – Picture Book | $9.99

Farmer George Plants a Nation - Big Sky Life Books

We recommend this book: Beautiful illustrations and lots to learn in this book about George Washington. The book includes information on his life outside of the war and presidency as well. Did you know he was an inventor? From his presidential desk, he designed a barn with sixteen sides. It was two stories tall and allowed for his workers to be able to tread wheat inside during bad weather.

George Washington was always looking at inefficiencies and experimenting to improve them. Character traits that came to mind after reading this book: curiosity, ambition, leadership, diligence.

This book also includes a timeline in the back and excerpts from his diary throughout the story.

Book summary: Besides being a general and the first president of the United States, did you know George Washington was also a farmer? Here's a look at America's first President, as he's rarely seen.
